1876 Advert: 'G. PLANT & CO. LIMITED, Engineers, and Boiler Makers, Albion Iron Works, Miles Platting, Manchester (G. Plant managing director, late manager of boiler departments at W. and J. Galloway and Sons, Manchester), makers of the Crosland, Galloway, Cornish, vertical, and every description of stationary steam and hot water Boilers. All kinds of wrought iron boiler tubes-conical, parallel, oval, elbow, &c.; also wrought iron high pressure manholes made with the utmost despatch and accuracy. Pans, tanks, &c. of all sizes and descriptions made. Existing boilers tubed and other repairs done promptly and efficiently at reasonable cost.'[2]
1877 'Fatal Accident at Miles Platting.— On Wednesday morning, at about half-past ten, a shocking accident occurred at Miles Platting. It appears that man named William Leather, about 20 years of age, a boilermaker, who resided in Owen-street, Hulme, was working at the Hulme Hall-lane Works, Miles Platting, when a piece of iron fell upon him. His head was terribly injured. In a state of insensibility he was removed to the Royal Infirmary, where, upon examination, life was found to be extinct.'[3]
