Alexander Bertram Cowan (c1854-1902)

1902 Obituary [1]

ALEXANDER BERTRAM COWAN died at Parkgate, near Rotherham, on February 21, 1902, at the age of forty-eight. He began his career as analytical chemist with Messrs. John Pattinson & Son of Newcastle-on-Tyne, and shortly after leaving them received the appointment of head chemist to the Weardale Iron and Coal Company, which he held for eight years.

He was then appointed steelworks manager in the same firm, taking charge of their new Siemens acid furnaces, and he continued in this capacity for sixteen years, acting also as manager for their gasworks.

He left the company's service in 1897, and accepted the post of steelworks manager to the Parkgate Iron and Steel Company, where he remained until his death.

He was elected a member of the Iron and Steel Institute in 1878.
