Alexander Cunningham (1814-1893)
Alexander Cunningham (1814-1893), British army engineer with the Bengal Engineer Group who later took an interest in the history and archaeology of India. In 1861 he was appointed to the newly created position of archaeological surveyor to the government of India; and he founded and organised what later became the Archaeological Survey of India.
1833 Joined the Bengal Engineers at the age of 19 as a Second Lieutenant and spent the next 28 years working for the British Government of India
1841 Made executive engineer to the king of Oudh
1844-45 Appointed engineer at Gwalior and was responsible for constructing an arched stone bridge over the Morar River
1856 Appointed chief engineer of Burma,
