Alexander McVicar (1858-1922)

1923 Obituary [1]

ALEXANDER McVICAR was born at Ardrishaig, Scotland, on 30th June 1858.

He served an apprenticeship of over five years with Messrs. John Elder and Co., after which he went to sea for five years, becoming Chief Engineer in January 1888.

He then was appointed Engineer and Works Manager for the North British and Hawkes Bay Freezing Co., at Napier, New Zealand.

In 1897 he became Ship and Engineer Surveyor, and Inspector of Machinery for the New Zealand Government, and held these posts for seven years, after which he started in practice for himself as consulting engineer and ship surveyor, and later became chief mechanical engineering instructor at the Wellington Technical College.

Owing to increasing deafness he confined his energies to coaching engineers for examinations, and met with great success.

His death from paralysis took place on 19th December 1922, in his sixty-fifth year.

He became a Member of this Institution in 1913.
