"ALFRED HARRY GEORGE BANNISTER, whose death occurred on 4th May 1948 in his seventy-fourth year, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1921.
He received his technical education at the Croydon and Regent Street, London, Polytechnics, and served a six years' apprenticeship, terminating in 1897, with Messrs. W. R. Dell and Son, engineers and mill wrights, of Croydon. He then found employment as improver to Messrs. J. Baker and Sons, of Willesden, and as erector to Messrs. Davey Paxman and Company, Ltd., at Colchester, before proceeding in 1901 to South Africa, where over a term of years he filled a variety of positions including those of works manager to Mr. Arthur Collins, millwright, of Pietermaritzburg, and instructor of engineering at the City Technical Institute.
Subsequently he was appointed manager of the Phoenix Foundry, Johannesburg, and after holding this position for six years acted in the same capacity for the Globe Foundry. In addition he was consulting engineer to the South African Alkali Co. In 1916 he joined H.M. Forces and served with the South African Brigade in France and Belgium. He returned to this country in 1920 and entering into partnership with the proprietor of the Drayton Engineering Works, Croydon, retained a connection with that business to the end of his career."
