"ALFRED SMITH was in the service of the London and Thames Haven Oil Wharves Company, Ltd., for thirty-one years. He was born in 1887 and received his technical education at the East London Technical College.
On the completion of a seven years' apprenticeship with Messrs. Alfred Smith, Ltd., London, general and chemical engineers, in 1910, he secured a post as foreman of the machine shop and outside erector for Messrs. W. J. Fraser and Company, Ltd., Dagenham.
Three years later he was appointed engineer to Messrs. Owens Works, Ltd., and was responsible for the installment of the plant throughout the works.
In 1916 he enlisted in the Royal Garrison Artillery and subsequently held a commission in the Royal Engineers. He entered upon his association with the London and Thames Haven Oil Wharves Co. in 1919 and for six years occupied the position of assistant engineer with the charge of the workshops and foundry.
He was then appointed engineer and manager of the firm's depot at Le Havre where he was responsible for the handling of no less than five million tons of oil in the course of a single year. From 1941 until his death, which occurred on 25th July 1950, he had been works manager of the wharves at Thames Haven. Mr. Smith was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1937."
