Alice Tredwell (1823-1867), Railway Contractor

1846 Solomon Tredwell, railway contractor, married Alice Pickering in Leeds[1]

1851 Living at High Field, Leekfrith, Staffs: Solomon Tredwell (age 28 born Bredgar, Worcs.), Contractor. With his wife Alice Tredwell (age 28 born Brampton, Cumb.) and their daughter Alice Tredwell (age 2 born Leek). Also his mother-in-law Martha Pickering (age 54 born Macclesfield). Also listed are John Pickering (age 19 born Brampton); Robinson (Pickering) (age 20); Richard Augusti Barck (age 28) William Pickering (age 25 born Brampton), Contractor; Edward Pickering (age 23 born Brampton), Contractor; and E. M. Pickering (age 1). Five servants.[2]

1859 Solomon Tredwell gained a contract to construct the Great Indian Peninsula Railway but died within fifteen days of landing in India. His wife, Alice Tredwell, took on the contract and appointed Messrs Adamson and Clowser to manage it for her in her absence. She then returned to England. This arrangement lasted for seven years.

1861 Living at Golden Green, Hendon, Mddx.: Alice Tweedale (age 38 born Cumberland), Fundholder and Widow. With her daughter Alice E Tweedale (age 12 born Staffs) and son M. J. Tweedale (age 4 born London). Also her mother Martha Picking (age 64). Also listed are relatives Wm Picking (age 35), Contractor; John Picking (age 20), Contractor; Mary Ann Picking (age 33); Edward Picking (age 10); Mary A. Picking (age 2); and Annie Picking (age 18). Two visitors. Seven servants.[3]

1867 June 14th. Died at Ryde IOW.
