Andrew Barclay (1814-1900), founder of Andrew Barclay, Sons and Co, Caledonia Engine Works.
1814 Born
1828 Apprenticed to the trade of plumber and coppersmith and spent a lot of time with Gregory, Thomson and Co.
1840 He set up a partnership with Thomas McCulloch in the manufacturer of mill shafts in Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire, Scotland.
1840 Partnered up with Mr. McCulloch and established a small engineering works making shafting and mill gearing for calico printing.
1840 He set up workshops specializing in the manufacture of winding engines for the local coal mining industry
c.1842 A couple of years later that he branched out on his own in the manufacture of his patented gas lamps.
However the money from the gas lamp patent sale was never paid and the company and sequestration came the following year.
1847 Acquired an acre of land from the Duke of Portland, which later became the Caledonia Works.
1859 Set up a locomotive building business which became Andrew Barclay, Sons and Co
1900 Died aged 86.
