"ANDREW CORMIE BERNARD, who was born in 1892, received his general education at the High School, Kirkcaldy, and his technical instruction at the Heriot-Watt College, Edinburgh. His apprenticeship was served from 1907 to 1913 with Messrs. Douglas and Grant, Ltd., of Kirkcaldy, in whose employment he continued as an estimating draughtsman for another year.
From 1914 to 1919 he was in charge of the erection of repair shops for the Admiralty at Invergordon and Rosyth Dockyard. A year later he joined the staff of the Steel Company of Scotland, Ltd., in Glasgow, as chief draughtsman, and after holding this position for six years was appointed chief engineer of the firm's Blochairn Steel Works. In 1932 he became superintending engineer for the Carron Co, of Falkirk, and three years later received the appointment of engineering works manager. In this capacity he took charge of the foundry, the drop forging plant, and the fitting shops.
In addition he was responsible for the layout and erection of a shell factory. He rejoined the Steel Company of Scotland in 1939 as works manager of the Blochairn works. In August 1942 he returned to the Carron Co as chief works manager, and in April 1944 was appointed general works manager, a post which he held until his death which occurred on 26th August 1948. Mr. Bernard was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1938."
