Andrew Ritchie Hunter was born in 1871, and served his apprenticeship with J. McDowall and Sons.
He then occupied the position of foreman successively with the Naval Construction and Armaments Co, Barrow, William Cramp and Sons, Philadelphia, U.S.A., and the Mo-Car Syndicate.
In 1902 he was appointed Engineer to the Duke of Portland at Welbeck.
He was elected an Associate Member of the Institution of Automobile Engineers in 1908.
