"ARTHUR JAMES CARRATT was born in 1885.
He served a four years' apprenticeship with Messrs. T. Walter and Company, Ltd ., of Leeds, on the conclusion of which, in 1903, he found employment as a draughtsman with various engineering firms including Messrs. Vickers, Ltd., of Barrow, for whom he was engaged on the design of hydraulic and electrical machinery for warships. In 1907 he was appointed leading draughtsman at the Coventry Ordnance Works, and four years later became a departmental manager. Subsequently he went to Manchester where he successively held positions as works manager to Messrs. Galloways, Ltd., Messrs. Newton and Harper, and Messrs. Maxwell and Company.
From 1930 to 1935 he was inspection superintendent for Messrs. Leyland Motors, Ltd., at Kingston-on-Thames. His final appointment, which he held from 1938 until his retirement in March 1949, was that of assistant director in the Ministry of Supply. Mr. Carratt, whose death occurred on 4th June 1949, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1915."
