Arthur Joseph Victor Underwood, OBE (Fellow) of London, died on Mar 14. A graduate at Leeds University, he gained first class honours in mathematics and civil engineering, which was followed by a postgraduate course in chemical engineering at Imperial College. | |||
After holding various industrial posts at home and abroad, he established a practice as a consulting chemical engineer in 1931. | |||
This work covered a wide field including oil shale, synthetic oils, petroleum, petrochemicals, whaling and industrial development in under-developed countries. | |||
Dr Underwood was a member of Council of the Association of Consulting Engineers, 1949-50 and 1951-53 and first joined IMechE as an Associate Member in 1935. Regarded as an outstanding engineer, he will be particularly missed in the field of chemical engineering. | |||

Arthur Joseph Victor Underwood, OBE (Fellow) of London, died on Mar 14. A graduate at Leeds University, he gained first class honours in mathematics and civil engineering, which was followed by a postgraduate course in chemical engineering at Imperial College.
After holding various industrial posts at home and abroad, he established a practice as a consulting chemical engineer in 1931.
This work covered a wide field including oil shale, synthetic oils, petroleum, petrochemicals, whaling and industrial development in under-developed countries.
