ARTHUR WILLIAM CLEVERLY had been chief colliery engineer of the Tredegar Iron and Coal Company since 1919. He first joined the firm in 1911 as a draughtsman at the Oakdale colliery, and in 1916 was promoted to be assistant colliery engineer at Tredegar. As chief engineer he was responsible for the mechanical equipment of five collieries, having a total output of 1,500,000 tons per annum, and carried out a considerable amount of reorganization and modernization, including the rebuilding of screening plants around obsolete ones. He was very interested in fuel economy and introduced several improvements to Lancashire boilers, one of which, a water circulating tube in the boiler flue, he patented.
Mr. Cleverly was born at Risca, near Newport, Mon., in 1878, and served his apprenticeship from 1893-1898 with Messrs. Henry White and Company of Risca, and after a few months with Messrs. C. D. Phillips and Company of Gloucester, he returned to the former firm, with whom he remained until 1902. He then became a mechanic in charge of machinery at local brickworks, and 2.5 years later became assistant draughtsman at the Castle Works, Rogerstone, Mon., of Messrs. Guest, Keen and Nettlefolds, where he remained until joining the Tredegar Company in 1911.
Mr. Cleverly, who had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1921, died at Tredegar on 9th September 1932.
