ARTHUR WILLIAM HERBERT, born on the 9th August, 1857, died at Capetown on the 13th December, 1915.
He gained his early practical experience on the Great Eastern Railway.
After a short stay in the United States, he went to South Africa in 1888, and was appointed Assistant Engineer on the Cape Government Railways.
From this date until 1906, when he retired on account of ill-health, he was continuously employed on railway survey and construction in Cape Colony, the Orange Free State and Natal, acting on the staff of the Imperial Military Railways during the war.
He was elected an Associate Member on the 4th December, 1883.
