Auchentoshan Distillery

1823 This is used by the modern business as its date of establishment. A short-lived distillery was established at Duntocher by John Bulloch in 1817, but this may have been an entirely separate venture. Alfred Barnard was told that the date of foundation was 1825.
1834 The distillery was bought by John Hart and Alexander Filshie. At this time the spelling "Auchintoshan" was used.
1875 The distillery was taken over by the Greenock firm of C.H. Curtis and Co. They were the proprietors at the time of Barnard's visit, at which point annual output was 50,000 gallons.
1903 By now the distillery was in the hands of the brewers George and John Maclachlan, which became G. and J. Maclachlan Limited in 1907. The company was later reconstructed as Maclachlans Limited. They were the proprietors of "Iona" blended Scotch whisky for which, presumably, Auchentoshan spirit was the principal ingredient.
1960 The business was acquired by J. and R. Tennent, which merged into Bass Charrington. They in turn sold the business to Eadie Cairns Limited in 1969, who developed the site as well as promoting the Auchentoshan brand as a Lowland single malt.
1984 The distillery was purchased by Stanley P. Morrison Limited, which later became Morrison Bowmore Distillers Limited
1994 The Japanese brewing and distilling group Suntory took over Morrison Bowmore.
2021 The distillery is ultimately owned by Beam Suntory, the result of a takeover of Beam Inc. by the Japanese group in 2014. Production is entirely marketed as triple-distilled Lowland single malt whisky.
