Bancks and Co's Plan of Manchester, 1831
Full title: Bancks & Co's Plan of Manchester and Salford, 1831
This map was published in 1832, from a survey completed in 1831.
The map, drawn at a scale of approximately 1 inch to 100 yards, provides a valuable resource in the study of the development of industrial Manchester.
Copies are displayed at various museums in the Manchester area, and a version at a slightly reduced scale is available on a series of eighteen A3 sheets. This was published by Neil Richardson in 1982
Neil Richardson also published a copy of William Green's plan of Manchester and Salford, begun in 1787 and completed in 1794. Taken together, these maps clearly illustrate the dramatic changes in the landscape which resulted from the Industrial Revolution. The continued progress can be seen in later plans, including Adshead's 1851 Maps of Manchester and Goad's Insurance Plans
