of Workington

The Beckermet Mining Co Ltd extracted low phosphorus hematite ore from shafts at Beckermet and Haile Moor situated near the present day Sellafield Nuclear plant.

1870 The Solway Works were established

1896 The Solway Works were bought by Charles Cammell and Co.

1901 The company was registered on 4 June to acquire iron and coal mines at Beckermet, Cumberland. [1]

Post-1918 Became a branch of the United Steel Companies

1951 Nationalised under the Iron and Steel Act; became part of the Iron and Steel Corporation of Great Britain[2]

1954 One of the United Steel companies returned to private ownership[3]
