1935 First bauxite mine established on Bintan Island, Indonesia
1962 Titanium dioxide production began in the Netherlands
1970 Royal/Dutch Shell Group acquired Billiton.
1977 First joint venture discussions held with Broken Hill Proprietary Indonesia to explore for metal minerals on the island of Belitung, Indonesia.
1978 Acquired Morris Ashby Limited, United Kingdom, producer of anti-corrosive pigments for paint industry.
1981 Commissioned magnesium plant at Veendam, the Netherlands.
1987 Commissioned Boddington gold mine in Western Australia.
2001 Agreement to merge with BHP. The company became BHP Billiton
