Cape Town and Wellington Railway
1857 Government sanctioned a line from Cape Town to Wellington
Opened simultaneously with the Natal Railway Company's line from Durban to Umgeni, on the Natal Coast
Both these railways in Cape Colony and Natal were the property of private companies, and were built to the 4ft. 8 1/2 in. gauge.
When the private companies were bought out by the different Governments, the gauge was altered to 3ft. 6in., which became the standard throughout South Africa.
