West Yorkshire is a metropolitan and ceremonial county in England, with a population of 2.3 million and an area of just under 800 square miles. The area was heavily industrialised, particularly in the fields of textile production, textile machinery, machine tools, engines, pumps and a wide range of other engineering equipment.

A number of towns in the region were well-known for machine tool production, in particular Halifax, Keighley, and Leeds.
