Steel foundries were very few in number compared with iron foundries. Although the basic principles and the required plant are very similar, the successful production of steel castings was much more difficult. The main problems were porosity, and the effects of shrinkage in the castings. Furthermore, the development of the steel foundry industry had to await the availability of relatively cheap steel.
