CHARLES HENRY GUEST was born in Leeds on 3rd April 1856, and was educated in Scarborough and at the Friends' School, Ayton, Yorkshire.
He served a five years' apprenticeship at the works of Messrs. Greenwood and Batley, Leeds, and studied at the Leeds Mechanics' Institute in the evenings.
In 1877 he was employed by Messrs. Pearson and Co., Leeds, first as journeyman and later as manager of the London office.
Six years later he entered into partnership with Mr. Louis Barrow as laundry engineers and cycle manufacturers at Aston, Birmingham, and on the dissolution of the business in 1893 he became Works Manager to the Cycle Components Manufacturing Co., Ltd., Birmingham.
In 1895 he took up the post of General Manager to Messrs. R. W. Webb, Ltd., Draycott, Derby, cycle component manufacturers.
From Draycott he moved to Derby where in 1919 he built the Midland Garage.
He had several inventions to his credit, of which may be mentioned the "Draycott Free Wheel", a hydraulic bobbin press, etc.
His death took place at Derby on 22nd March 1924, in his sixty-eighth year.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1898.
