Their home was a two bedroom dwelling house at the top of stone steps leading from a place called Fletcher’s Yard which was later renamed 13 John Street.

Charles was a loom frame-maker in the textile industry who, when his wife died, put his three young children in the care of foster parents and took advantage of an offer to train for the Congregationalist ministry

1838 April 6th. Death of his wife Sarah (presumably his second wife). 'On the 6th inst., in Bedford-street, Chorlton-upon-Medlock, aged 61 years, Sarah, wife of the Rev. Charles Whitworth, Independent Minister.' [1]
1841 Living at Park, Walmsley, Bury (age c60 born Lancashire), a Minister. No one else in abode. [2]
1848 January 31st. Death of his daughter Charlotte. 'Monday last, at Northowram, in her 40th year, Charlotte, eldest daughter of the Rev. Charles Whitworth, and sister Mr Joseph Whitworth, machine maker, Manchester.[3]
1848 His daughter Ellen marries John Tinker MacGowan, a Druggist in Halifax
1851 Living at 1 Blundell Place, Leeds (age 69 born Cockymoor, Lancs), an Annuitant and Widower. In the home of his daughter Ellen MacGowan (age 28 born Manchester) and her husband John Tinker MacGowan, a Chemist and their children including Joseph Whitworth MacGowan (age 1). Also Ellen's sister (John Tinker MacGowan' sister-in-law) Eliza Goddard (age 36 born Heckmondwicke) and her daughter Sarah Ellen (age 7 born Manchester). [4]
1861 Living at 52 Westhouse Lane, Leeds (age 79 born Manchester), a Retired Minister (Independent). With his daughters Ellen MacGowan (age 30), a Druggist's wife and Eliza Goddard (age 35 born Yorkshire), a Widow. Also three MacGowan grand-children. One servant. [5]
