"CLAUDE HERBERT DOBELL had considerable experience of electric traction with the Underground Railways in London.
He was born in 1883 and educated at Truro Grammar School and the Finsbury Technical College. On the conclusion of a two years' apprenticeship with the City and South London Railway he continued in the service of the company as charge engineer. He was appointed second assistant engineer in 1914, but in the following year he joined H.M. Forces and later was commissioned in the Royal Engineers, with whom he served in Mesopotamia. He was mentioned in despatches and rose to the rank of captain. He then held brief appointments during the next five years, in this country and the Near East, including that of district engineer in charge of electrical and mechanical services at Amara, Mesopotamia.
On the conclusion of three years' service as electrical and mechanical engineer in the public works department of the Palestine Government he returned to England and became sales representative for Messrs. Radiovisor Parent, Ltd., makers of light-ray apparatus, with whom he remained for eleven years. His final position, which he held with marked ability from 1941, was that of shop manager in charge of the planning and progressing of all engineering work at the Royal Ordnance Factory, Chorley, Lancs. Mr. Dobell had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1927. His death occurred in Chorley on 20th September 1948."
