1872 Daniel Stapfer had built a steam tricycle that ran 'at the speed of a trotting horse', but the boiler steaming rate was inadequte and the fire was difficult to maintain, with charcoal or coke.[1]

1875 Report of his investigations, with M. Baret, engineer of the Compagnie des Docks, of Field tubes in boilers.[2]
