EDWARD CODLING, B.Sc. (Durham), died at Manchester on the 7th September, 1903, aged forty-one.
Born on the 18th July, 1862, he served an apprenticeship under J. W. Jordan, of Norwich, from 1878 to 1883, and was subsequently employed for two years by the North-Eastern Engineering Co, Wallsend-on-Tyne, and Messrs. Sir W. G. Armstrong, Mitchell & Co, Elswick.
In 1885 he gained the North-East Coast Engineering Scholarship, with which he proceeded to the University of Durham, where he obtained the Junior and Senior Pemberton Scholarships and a Whitworth Scholarship, and graduated in Science.
In 1888, he became Resident Engineer to the North-Eastern Sanitary Association at their Newcastle branch, and was transferred in 1890 to Manchester, where, in 1892, he entered into private practice, being principally engaged in the design and construction of drainage and sewage-disposal works. He also held the appointment of Engineer to the Lancashire and Cheshire Sanitary Association.
Mr. Codling was elected an Associate Member of the Institution on the 4th February, 1896.
