1963 Obituary [1]

Sir Edward Herbert, O.B.E. (Member), died on 28th. April at the age of 71. He had spent most of his life in the aircraft industry, finally becoming chairman of Short Brothers and Harland Ltd. Among his many interests Sir Edward included work for educational bodies.

In 1952 he was made a member of the Court of Nottingham University and in 1953 he served on the Grand Council of the Federation of British Industries. He was appointed chairman of the Governing Body of Loughborough College of Technology in 1957. He had also been a member of several Government Boards.

In 1959-60 he held the position of High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire. Sir Edward, who was a Freeman of the City of London, was knighted in 1951. His experience and friendship were of great value to this Institution.
