EDWARD J. HALL was born in Perth Amboy, N.J., on the 31st March, 1853, and graduated from the Sheffield Scientific School of Yale University in 1873.
In 1878 he organized in Buffalo, N.Y., a telephone company of which he became vice-president and general manager, and in 1885 he took charge of the development of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company, the telephone line from New York to Philadelphia being opened to the public two years later under his direction.
At the time of his death, which occurred at Watkins, N.Y., on the 17th September, 1914, he was vice-president of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Western Union Telegraph Company.
He was elected a Foreign Member of the Institution in 1889, and became a Member in 1911.
