"EDWARD TURNER SMITH was connected with the Nigerian Railways during almost the whole of his professional career. After serving his apprenticeship with Messrs. Dubs and Company, Ltd., Glasgow, and also in the locomotive works of the Caledonian Railway, he joined the Uganda Railway in 1898 and was made locomotive foreman, a position he retained for three years. In 1903 he was appointed assistant locomotive superintendent on the Nigerian Railways and ten years later was promoted to be district superintendent. His final appointment, which dated from 1917, was that of assistant chief mechanical engineer, but in 1921 he was obliged to retire on account of ill-health. Mr. Smith, whose death occurred in his seventy-third year on 11th November 1945, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1902 and was transferred to Membership in 1912."
