EUWIN WALTER GREENWELL, son of Mr. R. T. Greenwell, of Sunderland, was born on the 1st September, 1867.
In September, 1884, he was articled to Mr. H. H. Wake, engineer to the River Wear Commission, for five years, and on the expiry of his pupilage was engaged by Mr. Wake as an assistant. In that capacity he was employed on various works connected with the improvement of the port of Sunderland, including harbour-protecting piers, river quays, the construction of a new iron coal-staith, with deepening of berth; the undersetting of dock walls; concrete retaining-walls and approaches; dredging a large portion of the River Wear; and the erection of new iron transit-sheds with timber wharf, railway approaches and hydraulic cranes, of which he had sole charge.
Falling into ill-health he was obliged to relinquish his position with Mr. Wake in 1893, and from that time until his early death at sea, on the 27th September, 1896, he was unable to follow the profession.
Mr. Greenwell was elected an Associate Member on the 5th December, 1893.
