Eleanor Josephine Trehawke Davies
Miss Eleanor Josephine Trehawke Davies / Davis (1880-1915), the English airwoman known in her aviation times as Miss Trehawke Davies. It appears she was not given the name Trehawke at birth but it was her father's middle name.
She was born in the St. Pancras area of London in 1880 to Frederick and Eleanor Davies. Her father was for many years an Alderman with the Marylebone Council. Her mother was previously a Springbett from Wilsford in the Vale of Pewsey, Wiltshire.
1891 Her parents are living at Fitzroy Street, London but she is not listed in the household. Frederick T. (aged 38) is a Solicitors Clerk and her mother Eleanor Davis (age 40) is a Milliner and Employer [1]
1901 Eleanor J. Davis lived at 9 Cavendish Square, London aged 21 (born in London), single, with her parents Frederick T. (aged 47), an Articled Clerk - Law and her mother Eleanor R. (age 50), a Milliner and Employer. Plus a servant. [2]
1912 April 29th. Miss Trehawke Davis flew the channel as a passenger with Gustav Hamel [3]
1912 May 21st. Miss Trehawke Davis flew the channel as a passenger with Gustav Hamel from Paris to Eastchurch in a Bleriot monoplane [4]
1912 June 8th. Passenger with Gustav Hamel in the 1912 Aerial Derby [5]
1912 September 3rd. Flew Paris to Berlin as a passenger with H. J. D. Astley in a Bleriot monoplane but they lost their way [6]
1913 April 9th Presentation of a trophy from the Women's Aerial League [7]
1914 January 2nd. 'Looped the Loop' at Hendon while a passenger with Gustav hamel [8]
Eleanor Trehawke Davies bought two Bleriot machines and picked good pilots to fly her about, notably Gustav Hamel, B. C. Hucks and James Valentine. One of the planes was given to the Royal Naval Air Service.
1915 November. When she died she was living in Portland Place, not far from her place of birth.
