Baron Emile Theodore Quinette De Rochemont died in Paris on the 8th December, 1908, at the age of 70.
An engineer of the first rank in France, his name and reputation were not less widely known and esteemed in England and America than in his own country. To English engineers in particular his death will be a great loss.
Born in 1838, he was trained at the Polytechnic School and at the Ecole des Ponts et ChaussBes. He went first to Havre as District Engineer, and subsequently became Engineer of the Tancarville canal.
In 1883 he was appointed Chief Engineer of the Port of Havre, and the great works of improvement which he carried out there will always be associated with his name. He was successively appointed Inspecteur-General des Ponts et Chausskes, Director of Roads, Navigation and Mines in the Ministry of Public Works, and Director of Lights and Beacons, and he was also Professor of the Ecole des Ponts et Chaussees, teaching to many generations of young engineers the course on maritime works which he afterwards made the subject of an authoritative treatise. One of the founders of the Permanent International Association of Navigation Congresses, he did much good work on its executive committee. He was an Officer of the Legion of Honour and bore several foreign decorations. In 1894 he was elected a Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
Baron Quinette de Rochemont was elected an Associate of The Institution on the 4th February, 1870, and was transferred to the class of Members on the 22nd May, 1883.
