"ERNEST HODGSON SAVAGE, who was born in 1895, received his technical education at the Manchester Municipal College of Technology.
He was associated with the firm of Messrs. Mirrlees, Bickerton and Day, Ltd., of Stockport, from his apprenticeship, which he served from 1912 to 1917, up to the time of his death, which occurred on 9th March 1949.
After receiving his practical training he was appointed assistant resident engineer at the firm's office in Calcutta and later became manager of the Bombay office. After investigating trade possibilities in South American countries and visiting users of Diesel engines he received, in 1924, his final appointment at Buenos Aires as resident engineer for Messrs. Mirrlees, Bickerton and Day. During this period (which extended to twenty-five years) he was responsible to the managing director for the supervision of a contract for the erection of a generating station and for the installation of Diesel engines and pumping equipment. In addition he supervised numerous power stations in India, Brazil, and other countries, his duties in this connection including the investigation of mechanical difficulties. Mr. Savage had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1939."
