FRANCIS ELSTOB was associated for many years with the London Hydraulic Power Company of Southwark. He joined the staff in 1889 as inspector of machinery and mains; in 1903 he was appointed assistant superintendent, and in 1911 he became superintendent. His various responsibilities included the laying and repair of hydraulic mains in London.
He had served under the late Mr. George Cochrane, M.I.Mech.E., who had been superintendent of the company.
Mr. Elstob was born at York in 1859, and received his technical education from 1876 to 1882 at the York Science Schools, where he gained honours in a Whitworth Scholarship Examination.
He served his apprenticeship from 1875 to 1881 in the locomotive works of the North Eastern Railway, and for a further four years gained experience in the erecting shop.
He later became an assistant in the works and dace of Messrs. W. Parker and Son, general engineers and millwrights, York, and subsequently carried out repair work to brick and tile machinery on the Dawnay Estate at Shipton, Yorks.
He was for a short time employed by a firm of electrical manufacturers as an inspector of electric fittings before joining the London Hydraulic Power Company.
He was elected a Member of the Institution in 1912.
He retired in 1930, and his death occurred on 25th December 1932.
