FRANCIS HENRY GRIFFITHS was born in Birmingham on 19th January 1867, and was educated at St. George's School in that city.
At the age of sixteen he began an apprenticeship of six years with Messrs. Finny Brothers, going on to the Climax Tube Co. for three years, and then at the age of twenty-five he became manager of the British Tube Mills, Birmingham.
Some years later he started an iron foundry in Birmingham, and devised plant for the conversion of blood, etc. into manure. Disposing of the foundry he entered into partnership with a Mr. Raynor, and commenced the manufacture of pearl button machinery at Hockley.
Subsequently he joined the firm of Moore Bros., Ltd., pearl button makers, of Aston, eventually becoming works manager. During this period he invented various machines for improving the manufacture of buttons. Having joined the Board of Directors, he completely transformed the work of the firm from general iron and brass founders to extruders of yellow metal bars and sections. His connexion with the company lasted ten years, the last two of which he was Chairman.
His death took place at Handsworth on 2nd March 1922, at the age of fifty-five.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1921.
