FRANK DEAN, who was connected with the manufacture of wire ropes for over forty years, supervised the manufacture of the cables and accessories for the Newport Suspension Bridge and served for a considerable time on the committees of the Federation of Wire Rope Manufacturers.
He was born in Manchester in 1872 and received his technical education at Manchester Technical School. He was apprenticed to Messrs. Armstrong, Whitworth and Company, Ltd., Openshaw, Manchester, from 1887 to 1893. In 1898 he became chief engineer and works manager for Messrs. W. B. Brown and Company, Ltd., wire rope manufacturers of Bankhall, Liverpool, and remained with this company for nineteen years.
He joined Messrs. William Cooke and Company, Ltd., wire rope manufacturers, of Tinsley, Sheffield, in 1917, as ropery manager; later he was appointed works and commercial manager. In 1939 he became general manager, but had only held this position for six months when he died on 2nd December 1939.
He was elected a Member of the Institution in 1920.
