FRANZ J. MULLER died on June 7, 1906, at Meiderich, in a carriage accident. Born on June 6, 1863, in Java, he was brought on the death of his father to Cologne in the seventh year of his age. On completing his school course there in 1882 he studied at the Karlsruhe Technical School, and in 1885 received his first appointment as engineer at the works of the Union Company at Essen. In the following year he entered the service of the Gutehoffnungslnitte, and in 1888 he proceeded to the works of the Bochum Company.
In 1896 Mr. Otto Helmholtz, member of the Iron arid Steel Institute, offered him the post of chief engineer at the Rheinische Stahlwerk, where it fell to his lot to design the new steelworks and rolling-mills.
When, seven years later, Mr. Helmholtz resigned his post as director, Mr. Miller was chosen to succeed him. He was secretary of the local branch of the Society of German Engineers, and was an active member of council of the Society of German Ironmasters.
