"FREDERICK CHARLES BRITTAIN was associated with the Westinghouse Brake and Saxby Signal Company, of Chippenham, Wilts, and its predecessors, Messrs. Evans, O'Donnell, Ltd., and Messrs. Saxby Farmer, Ltd., during the whole of his professional career.
After serving his apprenticeship from 1899 to 1904 he was employed as a jig and tool draughtsman for six years. He was then promoted chief works draughtsman and in 1914 was made assistant works manager, but in the same year joined H.M. Forces and subsequently was granted a commission in the infantry. He was invalided home from France in 1917 and on his recuperation was seconded to the Ministry of Munitions. He returned to Messrs. Saxby and Farmer in 1919 to take up the appointment of chief draughtsman and estimator. Three years later he became works manager for the newly constituted merger, the Westinghouse Brake and Saxby Signal Company, Ltd., a position he retained until his retirement in 1936. Mr. Brittain, whose death occurred on 12th September 1947, at the age of sixty-six, was elected a Member of the Institution in 1929."
