George Alexander James Begg (Fellow) of Northwich, Cheshire, died on Jan 26. Born in 1901, he graduated BScTech (Manch) in 1920. His apprenticeship was served at Galloways Ltd, Manchester, and after a period with James Carmichael and Co of Dundee he joined Brunner, Mond and Co, Northwich, as a Senior Draughtsman. Brunner Mond and Co became the Alkali Division of ICI Ltd. Mr Begg advanced rapidly in the Engineering Section becoming Chief Engineer and Divisional Engineering Director in 1946. After his retirement he started a consultancy practice as Eckersley and Begg.
He was a founder member of the Graduates Section of the North Western Branch of IMechE and Chairman of the Section in 1926-27. He was Branch Chairman in 1946.
A man with wide interests outside engineering, he had a life long interest in the Scout Association being County Commissioner for West Cheshire 1963/71. During his retirement he gave much of his time to U MIST and to BSI.
