1950 Obituary [1]

"GEORGE STANLEY SUMMERS of Wallsend, whose death occurred suddenly at Newcastle upon Tyne, on 5th September 1949, was in the service of Messrs. Vickers-Armstrongs, Ltd., Elswick Works, during the previous thirteen years.

Born in 1893, he was educated at Bridgend School, Glamorganshire, and he served an apprenticeship at Cambrian Collieries, Ltd., South Wales. He attended technical classes and took a City and Guilds certificate in mechanical engineering.

During the 1914-18 war he served in the Royal Naval Air Service and attained the rank of a leading mechanic. Subsequently he held posts in the drawing office at Armstrong-Whitworth and Company, Ltd., and with Collies and Company, electrical engineers, Manchester, and Callender's Cables and Construction Company, Ltd. He was engaged on transmission-line construction with the two last-named companies. He finally settled on the North-east Coast in 1935, being employed as a designer-draughtsman with Messrs. Reyrolle and Company, Ltd., Hebburn-on-Tyne, before starting at Elswick Works, where his work included design on gun mountings. Mr. Summers was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1938."
