GEORGE WILLIAM CUTLER WEBB, O.B.E., was managing director of the Higham Engineering Company, of London, a position which he had held for over twenty years. He received his technical education at the Woolwich Polytechnic from 1895 to 1905, and after serving his apprenticeship in the Royal Arsenal joined the Army Ordnance Department as temporary engineer. In 1905 he became works engineer to Messrs. Vickers, Ltd., at their Dartford works and in 1912 was appointed manager there.
During the war of 1914-18 he had charge of 3,000 employees. In 1921 he accepted an appointment as managing director of the Higham Engineering Company and in the same year he also commenced to practice as a consulting engineer in London. In addition he was London manager for Lancashire Ordnance Accessories Company, and the Chain Roller Bearing Company.
Mr. Webb, whose death occurred as the result of an accident on 13th March 1942, in his sixty-first year, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1914 and was transferred to Membership in 1921.
