"GERALD DEMPSEY, B.Sc. (Eng.), was formerly chief engineer to Tate and Lyle, Ltd., London, sugar refiners. He was educated at the High School and University College in Dundee, where he also served his apprenticeship with Urquhart, Lindsay and Company, Ltd., from 1898 to 1903. After further experience with that firm as assistant chief draughtsman, he found employment in the drawing offices of Vickers, Sons and Maxim, Ltd., Hadfields, Ltd., Sheffield, Spencers, Ltd., and as leading draughtsman to Ropeways, Ltd.
In 1910 he joined the staff of Abram Lyle and Sons, Ltd. (now Tate and Lyle), as assistant chief engineer and after holding this position for fourteen years was promoted to be chief engineer. Mr. Dempsey was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1916 and transferred to Membership in 1928. His death in his seventieth year occurred at Dumore East, Co. Waterford, Eire, on 25th November 1950.
