"GILBERT WALLHEAD SOUTHERN was born in 1886 at Sheffield, where he also received his education. In 1900 he was apprenticed to Messrs. Steel, Peech, and Tozer, Ltd., and in 1904 he was engaged on drawing-office work and outside erection. In 1907 he was appointed assistant mechanical engineer in this firm, and he subsequently became chief engineer, and later works manager of this firm's plant at Templeborough. In 1929 he resigned this post and started practice as a consulting mechanical engineer. He was still acting in this capacity when he died suddenly on 27th January 1939. In 1933 he acquired an interest in the firm of Messrs. H. Peet, Ltd., Broomhill, Sheffield, and he became their managing director. This provided him with an opportunity to investigate problems connected with domestic fuel, a subject in which he was very interested. He was elected an Associate in 1921."
