1853 The Great Southern of India Railway Company was established with its headquarters at England.

1859 The company constructed its first railway line connecting Tiruchirappalli to Nagapattinam - 78.5 miles

1868 Constructed Tiruchirappalli to Erode - 88.5 miles - via Kodumunda

1874 The company merged with the Carnatic Railway to form the South Indian Railway with Tiruchirappalli as its headquarters. The city retained the position until 1908 when the company's headquarters was transferred to Madras
