"GWILYM WILLIAMS, began his career as a primary school teacher, but for the rest of his life he was associated with mechanical engineering, and more particularly with the motor industry. After six years' experience as a teacher he joined, in 1915, the British Piston Ring Company, Ltd., of Coventry, who appointed him foundry and technical manager with the charge of the drawing office.
During his connection with that firm, which lasted for seven years, Mr. Williams rendered valuable services with regard to the fundamental investigations leading to the standardization of piston rings by the British Engineering Standards Association in conjunction with the technical department of the Air Board. He also took an active part in elaborating and establishing a method of centrifugal casting and in addition lectured on the process before the Institute of British Foundrymen. He then went into business on his own account as a technical consultant and was thus engaged until 1928 when he became technical manager and chief draughtsman to the C.M.D. Engineering Company, Ltd., piston manufacturers, Warwick.
His final position, which he held from 1933 until his retirement in 1944, was that of works manager and secretary, with a seat on the Board, of Messrs. James and Company (Halesowen), makers of centrifugal castings. Mr. Williams, whose death occurred on 3rd December 1947, at the age of fifty-seven, was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1921 and was transferred to Associate Membership in 1927."
