HENRY MONTAGUE MATHEWS, C.I.E., born at Lowestoft in 1831, died at Surbiton on the 13th April, 1915, aged 83.
After serving an apprenticeship to Mr. G. Edwards, of Westminster, he became Superintendent and Manager of the Dublin and Belfast Junction Railway.
From 1853 to 1866 he was occupied, under Mr. Vignoles, Past-President, on the construction of railways in Spain and Brazil.
In 1868 he joined the Indian Public Works Department, and was posted to Burma, where he executed a great variety of public works.
In 1878 he was appointed Chief Engineer and Manager of the Burma State Railway. He also constructed and maintained the Irrawaddy and Sittang Valley railways, and acted as Chairman of the Rangoon Port Trust. He retired and returned to England in 1887.
Mr. Mathews was elected a Member of the Institution on the 7th March, 1865.
