1900 After certain structural modifications had been made to meet Admiralty requirements, the vessel was accepted for the Navy. On the delivery journey to Chatham, she ran into rough weather off the Lincolnshire coast; she broke her keel while plunging in a heavy sea and sank with considerable loss of life. The subsequent investigation highlighted the issue of calculating the strength of a steel hull.
