. . . . he entered, through the influence of the late Charles Waring, the works of the Somerset and Dorset Railway, where he remained until the year 1881. For the first five years he was an apprentice in the Carriage and Wagon Departments, and then for two years in the Drawing and Accountant’s Offices.
In the autumn of 1881 Mr. Harker obtained an appointment as a mechanical engineer on the staff of Waring Brothers for the construction of the Rio and Minas Railway. He superintended the fitting up and running of the temporary workshops and plant of the contractors, and of the permanent workshops of the company, and also the erection of the whole of the locomotives and rolling-stock for the company.
He remained in the service of Messrs. Waring Brothers until the final completion of the line in 1884, after which he entered the service of the Company as Chief Locomotive Superintendent,, which position he held until his death. . . . [more]
