1917 Obituary [1]

HENRY ALEXANDER LONGHURST was born in London on 30th July 1866.

After receiving a scholastic education at Tunbridge Wells, he was apprenticed in January 1884 to the printing trade, and continued in this work until 1895 when he was employed by the International Typograph Co., in Berlin, where he afterwards entered the works of Messrs. Ludwig Loewe and Co.

In 1898 he came to London and entered the service of the Linotype Co., Ltd., where he worked for two years in the experiment department, and then visited the Continent on their behalf to inspect and report on type-composing machines.

In 1907 he left the Linotype Co. to join the Typograph Co. of Berlin, as technical representative in the United Kingdom, and this post he held until November 1916 when he joined the Trench Warfare Supply Department of the Ministry of Munitions.

His death took place in London on 21st February 1917, at the age of fifty.

He was elected an Associate Member of this Institution in 1909.
