"HENRY EDWARD LAYTON spent no less than forty-four years of his long engineering career abroad, almost the whole of which was in connection with railways in Spain. He was born in 1868, and, after serving his apprenticeship with Messrs. Pollit and Wigzell, Sowerby Bridge, Yorks, from 1883 to 1889, remained in the employment of that firm as junior draughtsman for another year. Brief appointments then followed as works manager at the St. James's Ironworks in Bradford, and as draughtsman to Messrs. Hick, Hargreaves and Company, Ltd., Soho Ironworks, Bolton.
He began his career abroad in 1892 on taking up an appointment as mechanical engineer to the Victoria Mills Company, Ltd., of Cawnpore, India. A year later he went on to Spain, his first post there being that of junior assistant engineer to the Rio Tinto Company, Ltd., Huelva. Subsequently he was appointed senior assistant mechanical engineer and locomotive superintendent. He continued in the service of that firm until 1905, when he began a connection with the Bilbao River and Cantabrian Company, Ltd. (which lasted for thirty years), with the joint appointments of assistant resident manager and locomotive superintendent. He returned to Great Britain in 1935 and was for a time on the board of directors at the company's head office in London before his retirement from active life. Mr. Layton, whose death occurred on 22nd December 1949, was elected a Member of the Institution in 1906."
